The treatment

How Fractora RF Microneedling works

Fractora uses a handpiece containing a matrix of 600-micron pins to deliver fractional radiofrequency energy precisely into the dermis. At 1kHz, the RF current creates two simultaneous effects in a single pulse. First, ablative micro-lesions form at each pin tip, resurfacing texture, acne scarring and pigmented damage at a depth of 250 to 1000 microns depending on the energy setting selected. Second, as the current flows from the pin tips to the flat side electrodes, it exposes the entire non-ablated papillary and reticular dermis to a sub-necrotic thermal effect, reaching 2.7mm depth at 46 to 51 degrees Celsius. This heat stimulates neo-collagenesis and neo-elastosis, the formation of new collagen and new elastin, in the tissue between the ablation craters. Re-epithelialisation is complete within 48 hours; the deeper collagen remodelling continues for several months. Because the depth and energy are tunable, the treatment can be calibrated to your specific concern and Fitzpatrick skin type.

What to expect

  • Addresses texture, acne scarring, fine lines, pigmentation and laxity in a single session
  • Tunable ablation depth from 250 to 1000 microns, matched to your concern and skin type at consultation
  • Independent clinical study data: 65% average improvement in skin texture and wrinkles, 60% in pigmentation, at six months after a single full-face treatment (Theodorou, Mulholland et al., Anti-Aging Medical News, 2011)
  • Re-epithelialisation typically complete within 48 hours
  • Can be combined with injectables or other energy treatments in the same session
  • Suitable for Fitzpatrick skin types I to V with the appropriate pre-treatment protocol

Before you book

Is this treatment right for you?

Suitable for

  • Adults with acne scarring, enlarged pores or rough skin texture who want more significant resurfacing than non-ablative treatments can achieve.
  • Adults with fine lines, wrinkles or mild to moderate skin laxity on the face, neck, periorbital area or perioral area.
  • Adults with photodamage, superficial pigmentation or uneven skin tone.
  • Adults with Fitzpatrick skin types IV or V who are prepared to complete the required pre- and post-treatment hydroquinone protocol to manage the elevated risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Not suitable for

  • Pregnancy.
  • Active acne flares or active skin infection in the treatment area.
  • Keloid tendency, as the controlled injury could provoke keloid formation.
  • Implanted pacemakers or other electronic devices where radiofrequency energy poses a risk.
  • Metal implants in or near the treatment area.
  • Recent significant sun exposure or sunburn in the treatment area.
  • Fitzpatrick skin types IV and V without completing the mandatory two-month pre-treatment hydroquinone preparation, due to elevated risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
  • Suitability is confirmed at consultation following a full review of your medical history. The list above is not exhaustive.

In their own words

"My skin texture changed more in one session than in years of trying other treatments. The downtime was real, but absolutely worth it." (Representative client experience. Individual results vary.)

After your appointment

Aftercare

Keep the skin moisturised for the 3 to 4 days following treatment; your clinician will advise on appropriate products. Avoid direct sun exposure and apply a broad-spectrum SPF every day from the point your skin has healed. Makeup can usually be applied from day one to two. Avoid active skincare ingredients such as retinoids and acids until the skin has fully settled. If you are on a hydroquinone protocol, continue it as directed.

Common questions

Frequently asked about fractora rf microneedling

What does Fractora treat?
Fractora is used at the clinic for acne scarring, enlarged pores, rough skin texture, fine lines and wrinkles, mild to moderate skin laxity, and superficial pigmentation or photodamage, primarily on the face, neck and periorbital area.
How does Fractora work?
Fractora delivers radiofrequency energy through a matrix of 600-micron pins. Each pulse creates two simultaneous effects: fractional ablation at the pin tips, which resurfaces the skin, and a broad non-ablative thermal zone through the deeper dermis that stimulates new collagen and new elastin. Both mechanisms occur in a single treatment pulse.
How is Fractora different from Forma radiofrequency?
Both are InMode technologies, but they work differently. Forma is a non-invasive external radiofrequency device used for gradual, comfortable skin tightening with no downtime. Fractora is a fractional RF microneedling treatment where energy is delivered through micro-pins that penetrate the skin, allowing more significant resurfacing for concerns such as acne scarring and texture. Fractora involves a recovery period of 2 to 5 days; Forma does not.
How is Fractora different from SkinPen microneedling?
SkinPen is a mechanical microneedling device that creates controlled micro-injuries to stimulate the skin's natural healing response. Fractora adds radiofrequency energy to the microneedling action, generating both ablative and thermal effects simultaneously. This typically allows more significant improvement in texture, scarring and laxity, but with a longer recovery period than mechanical microneedling alone.
How many sessions will I need?
Between one and six sessions depending on your concern and the energy protocol agreed at consultation. More significant acne scarring typically requires a course. General rejuvenation or milder concerns may require fewer sessions.
What does the treatment feel like?
Topical anaesthetic is applied before the session, making it tolerable at standard energy settings. At higher energy levels, additional anaesthesia may be appropriate and will be discussed at your consultation before treatment begins.
What is the downtime?
Expect 2 to 5 days of visible recovery. Micro-lesions and redness are a normal part of the healing process and usually settle within one week. Makeup can typically be applied from day one to two post-treatment. Plan to avoid significant sun exposure during the recovery period.
When will I see results?
Initial improvements are generally visible within two weeks. The most noticeable results appear at two to three months as collagen remodelling continues. Clinical study data shows ongoing improvement at six months after treatment.
Is Fractora safe for darker skin tones?
Fractora has been used safely on Fitzpatrick skin types I to V in clinical studies. Types IV and V carry an elevated risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which is managed with a hydroquinone preparation protocol starting two months before treatment and continuing for two months after. Suitability and the protocol required are assessed in detail at consultation.
Can Fractora be combined with other treatments?
Yes. Fractora can be used in the same session as other energy treatments or alongside injectables as part of a broader plan. Combining it with anti-wrinkle injections or dermal fillers is sometimes called a FracTotal Facial approach. Your clinician will advise on what is appropriate for your skin and goals.
Are there risks I should know about?
As with all energy-based treatments, there are risks including temporary redness, swelling, and micro-lesions as part of normal healing. Rare adverse effects include infection, burns or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, particularly in higher Fitzpatrick skin types not on the appropriate preparation protocol. All risks will be discussed in full at your consultation. Fractora is a clinically established treatment delivered by a JCCP-registered practitioner within a doctor-led governance framework.
