Why it takes six or eight

Hair only responds while the follicle is growing, and only a share of it is growing at any one time. That single fact explains why it takes six or eight sessions, and why anyone promising it in two is selling you something. Between appointments you shave, you do not wax or pluck, because pulling the follicle out removes the thing the laser is aiming at. The people who understand that finish the course.

Where our laser patients travel from

The clinic is at 65 London Road, Newark-on-Trent, NG24 1RZ, with free parking at the front.

A course runs to six or eight sessions and sometimes more, because a follicle can only be treated while it is in active growth and not all of your hair is growing at once. That makes laser one of the longer commitments here. Worth thinking about the drive before you start rather than four sessions in.

We treat patients from Balderton, Farndon, Collingham, Southwell, Bingham and Ollerton across Nottinghamshire, and from Lincoln, Grantham and Sleaford over the Lincolnshire border. An extra small area takes around fifteen minutes, so a lunchtime appointment is realistic if you work locally. Larger areas need longer, and the prices by area above tell you which is which.

If you are travelling in from further out, say so when you book. Sessions are timed to your hair cycle rather than to the calendar, so there is usually room to move an appointment to suit the drive.

Regulatory position

Licensed premises

These premises hold a Massage and Special Treatment licence covering laser and intense pulsed light, issued under Part IV of the Nottinghamshire County Council Act 1985 and granted after an inspection. Most of England operates no such scheme, so a clinic elsewhere can run a Class 4 laser without any licence at all.

Holding it requires an external Laser Protection Adviser, a named Laser Protection Supervisor, written Local Rules ratified independently, wavelength-rated eyewear worn in the treatment room, a bound record of every use, and every practitioner licensed individually as a named Authorised User. It renews annually. The licence and its conditions are available to view at the clinic.

How does the Cynosure Elite+ laser work?

The Cynosure Elite+ has two wavelengths, Alexandrite 755nm and Nd:YAG 1064nm. The light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair and turns to heat, which damages the follicle's ability to regrow while largely sparing the skin around it. This is called selective photothermolysis. Two wavelengths mean the setting can be matched to your skin tone.

Can laser hair removal treat darker skin?

Yes, with the right wavelength. The Nd:YAG 1064nm wavelength on the Elite+ is less strongly absorbed by pigment in the surface of the skin, which makes it the appropriate choice for darker skin, Fitzpatrick types IV to VI. Alexandrite 755nm is used for lighter skin. Your skin type is assessed at consultation before a wavelength is chosen.

Does laser hair removal work on blonde, grey or red hair?

Usually not. The laser targets the pigment in the hair, and blonde, white, grey and red hair contain little or none of it, so they respond poorly or not at all. That is a limit of how laser works, whatever your skin type. You will be told at consultation if your hair colour makes a course unlikely to be worthwhile.

How many laser hair removal sessions will I need?

Most people need a course of six to eight sessions, and some need more. Hair only responds while the follicle is in active growth, and only part of your hair is growing at any one time, so each session reaches a different share of it. Sessions are timed to your hair cycle, which varies by body area.

Is there any downtime after laser hair removal?

Very little. The treated skin can look red, or show small raised bumps around the follicles, and this usually settles quickly. For around 24 to 48 hours afterwards, avoid heat and vigorous exercise. Use SPF on the treated skin, and follow the shaving advice you are given between sessions.

What should I avoid before laser hair removal?

Avoid recent sun exposure and active tanning, because tanned skin limits how the laser can be set. Tell us about any medication you take, as some make the skin more sensitive to light. Laser hair removal is not offered during pregnancy. Your health history, hair type and skin tone are all reviewed at consultation before a course is planned.

Can I wax or pluck between laser sessions?

No, shave instead. Waxing and plucking pull the hair out of the follicle, which leaves nothing for the laser to target at your next appointment. Shaving cuts the hair at the surface and leaves the root in place, which is what the laser needs to reach.

When will I see results from laser hair removal?

Results build across the course rather than after one visit. Treated hairs shed in the weeks after each session, and the reduction becomes clearer as later sessions reach follicles moving into active growth. Some people need occasional maintenance later, depending on the area and on hormones. A maintenance course of three sessions is available after a full course of six.
