The treatment

Cyst Removal: how it works

Dr Shahe Boghossian examines the lump and asks how long you've had it and whether it has changed. Most lumps are harmless and don't need removing. A lump that's painful, hard, fixed or growing needs your GP first. If removal suits you, he numbs the area with local anaesthetic and removes the cyst through a small cut, aiming to take out its capsule, the wall that surrounds it. Cysts can come back if the capsule isn't fully removed. If anything looks suspicious, he refers you to your GP the same day.

Common questions

Frequently asked about Cyst Removal

What kind of cysts can be removed?
Skin cysts such as sebaceous, epidermoid and pilar cysts, the lumps that sit under the skin. Dr Shahe examines the lump first, because not every lump is a cyst, and most lumps are harmless and don't need removing at all.
How is a cyst removed?
Dr Shahe numbs the area with local anaesthetic, then removes the cyst through a small cut, aiming to take out the capsule, the wall around it. The wound is then closed. He explains what he plans to do, and the likely scar, before he starts.
Can a cyst come back?
Yes. Cysts can come back if the capsule isn't fully removed, which is why removal aims to take out the whole capsule. Every removal carries some risk of the lesion coming back, and Dr Shahe explains the risk for your cyst.
Will there be a scar?
Yes, there will be a scar where the cut was made. Every removal carries some risk of scarring, colour change or the cyst coming back, and removal can leave a patch of darker skin, especially on black or brown skin. Dr Shahe explains the likely scar for your cyst before you decide.
When should I see my GP instead?
A lump that's painful, hard, fixed or growing needs your GP. Removal for appearance alone isn't usually available on the NHS, but a lump that worries you is a reason to see your GP first. If anything looks suspicious at the clinic, Dr Shahe refers you to your GP the same day.
Is cyst removal available on the NHS?
Removal for appearance alone isn't usually available on the NHS. If a cyst is causing a medical problem, your GP is the right first step. People come to the clinic when the cyst bothers them and the NHS won't remove it.
What does it cost?
Removal is from £250 per cyst. The consultation is £50, and there's no consultation charge if removal goes ahead on the same day. Dr Shahe confirms the plan and the cost before anything is removed. Prices include VAT.
Is there an age limit?
Removal is for adults aged 18 and over. Dr Shahe asks about your health and any medicines at the assessment, which decides whether removal suits you.
