The treatment

Varicose Vein Consultation: how it works

Dr Shahe Boghossian examines your legs, asks about your symptoms and your health, and explains what he finds. About a third of adults have varicose veins. Varicose veins usually need a duplex ultrasound scan before any treatment is decided, and the clinic doesn't scan or treat them. If you need a scan or treatment, he'll refer you. Compression stockings can ease symptoms but aren't a cure, and he'll tell you whether they're worth trying.

Is this treatment right for you?

Suitable for

  • Adults aged 18 and over with bulging or rope-like veins on the legs, or legs that ache or feel heavy, who want a doctor's view of what they have and what to do next.

Not suitable for

  • A vein that is bleeding heavily needs 999, not an appointment. Bleeding veins, leg ulcers and painful, hard veins need your GP urgently.

One appointment, and a clear next step

The clinic is at 65 London Road, Newark-on-Trent, NG24 1RZ, with free parking at the front.

The consultation is a single appointment. You leave knowing whether you need a scan, treatment at a vascular service, or nothing at all.

Patients travel to us from Balderton, Farndon, Collingham, Southwell, Bingham and Ollerton, and from Lincoln, Grantham and Sleaford.

Fine red or purple veins without any bulging are thread veins. They have their own page: leg thread vein treatment.

Common questions

Frequently asked about Varicose Vein Consultation

Do you treat varicose veins at the clinic?
No. The clinic examines and advises, and refers you if you need a scan or treatment. Varicose veins usually need a duplex ultrasound scan before treatment is decided, and the clinic doesn't scan. Laser, radiofrequency, foam and glue treatments for varicose veins are carried out by vascular services, and Dr Shahe can explain each one.
What happens at the consultation?
Dr Shahe Boghossian asks about your symptoms, your health and any medicines, then examines your legs. He explains what he finds, whether you need a scan, and what your options are, including doing nothing. The appointment takes about 20 minutes and costs £50. If he recommends thread vein treatment here and you go ahead, the £50 comes off the cost.
What treatment is usually recommended for varicose veins?
For varicose veins that need treating, heat treatment, by laser or radiofrequency, is the first choice. In a UK trial, laser closed more veins than foam at five years. The right treatment depends on the scan, which is why a scan comes before any decision.
Can I get varicose vein treatment on the NHS in Nottinghamshire?
In Nottinghamshire, NHS varicose vein treatment needs varicose eczema, skin hardening or an ulcer, two documented clots, or a major bleed. If you have any of those, see your GP first. Dr Shahe can tell you at consultation whether you seem to meet the criteria.
Do compression stockings help?
Compression stockings can ease symptoms such as aching and heaviness, but they aren't a cure. They don't make a varicose vein go away. Dr Shahe will tell you whether they're worth trying for you.
When should I see my GP instead?
If a vein is bleeding heavily, call 999. Bleeding veins, leg ulcers and painful, hard veins need your GP urgently. Varicose eczema or hardening of the skin on the lower leg are also a reason to see your GP, because they're part of the NHS criteria.
Are varicose veins common?
Yes. About a third of adults have varicose veins, and most adults have some thread veins. Thread veins are harmless and don't bulge. The consultation sorts out which you have and whether anything needs doing.
Can you treat my thread veins at the same time?
Thread veins on the legs can be assessed at the same visit. Whether they can be treated depends on what is underneath them: thread veins can sit on top of a varicose vein problem, and treating the surface first doesn't help. Dr Shahe will tell you which comes first.
