The treatment

Mole Removal: how it works

Moles can occasionally be cancerous, so we recommend a GP check before removal. A mole that changes size, shape or colour needs a GP. At the clinic, Dr Shahe Boghossian looks at the mole and asks how long you've had it and whether it has changed. If anything looks suspicious, he refers you to your GP the same day instead of removing it. If removal suits you, he numbs the area with local anaesthetic and removes the mole by shaving or a minor excision, depending on the mole and where it is.

After your appointment

Aftercare

Keep the area clean and dry while it heals, leave any scab alone, and follow the written aftercare you're given. Use SPF on the area once it has healed.

A GP check, then one appointment

The clinic is at 65 London Road, Newark-on-Trent, NG24 1RZ, with free parking at the front.

Moles can occasionally be cancerous, so we recommend a GP check before removal. Once that’s done, most moles are dealt with at one appointment, with a review afterwards where one is useful.

Patients travel in from Balderton, Farndon, Collingham, Southwell, Bingham and Ollerton, and from Lincoln, Grantham and Sleaford.

If you want a mole looked at rather than removed, the mole check is a separate service, read by a consultant dermatologist. Skin tags and other small growths are on the skin lesion removal page.

Common questions

Frequently asked about Mole Removal

Can a mole be cancerous?
Moles can occasionally be cancerous. Most moles are harmless and don't need removing, but that's a judgement for a doctor, not for a removal booking. We recommend a GP check before removal, and a mole that changes size, shape or colour needs a GP.
Do I need to see my GP first?
We recommend it. Moles can occasionally be cancerous, and your GP can refer you on the NHS if a mole needs investigating. Harmless moles aren't usually treated on the NHS, which is why people come to the clinic for removal once the GP is happy.
What happens if Dr Shahe thinks a mole looks suspicious?
He won't remove it as a cosmetic procedure. If anything looks suspicious, he refers you to your GP the same day, so the mole is investigated through the right route.
How is a mole removed?
Dr Shahe numbs the area with local anaesthetic, then removes the mole by shaving it level with the skin or by a minor excision, depending on the mole and where it is. He decides which at your consultation and explains why before he starts.
Will it leave a scar?
Every removal carries some risk of scarring, colour change or the mole coming back. Removal can leave a scar or a patch of darker skin, especially on black or brown skin. Dr Shahe explains the likely result for your mole before you decide.
Is mole removal available on the NHS?
Harmless moles aren't usually treated on the NHS, and removal for appearance alone isn't usually available. A mole that changes size, shape or colour is different: that needs your GP, who can refer you on the NHS.
What does it cost?
Removal is from £250 per mole. The consultation is £50, and there's no consultation charge if removal goes ahead on the same day. Dr Shahe confirms the plan and the cost before anything is removed. Prices include VAT.
Can I have a mole checked instead?
Yes. The mole check is a separate service: images of the mole are read by an external consultant dermatologist through Map My Mole. It's a check, not a removal, and the mole check page has the detail.
