The treatment

Lipoma Removal: how it works

Dr Shahe Boghossian examines the lump and asks how long you've had it and whether it has changed. A lump that's painful, hard, fixed or growing needs your GP, and lipomas over 5cm are checked at a specialist clinic, so he refers you rather than removing those. If removal suits you, he numbs the area with local anaesthetic and removes the lipoma through a small cut, aiming to take out its capsule. Lipomas can come back if the capsule isn't fully removed.

Common questions

Frequently asked about Lipoma Removal

What is a lipoma?
A lipoma is a lump of fatty tissue under the skin. Most lumps are harmless and don't need removing. Not every lump is a lipoma, though, which is why Dr Shahe examines it before anything is decided, and why some lumps go to your GP instead.
Which lipomas can be removed at the clinic?
Small lipomas, once Dr Shahe has examined them. Lipomas over 5cm are checked at a specialist clinic, and a lump that's painful, hard, fixed or growing needs your GP. In either case he refers you rather than removing it.
How is a lipoma removed?
Dr Shahe numbs the area with local anaesthetic, then removes the lipoma through a small cut, aiming to take out the capsule around it. The wound is then closed. He explains what he plans to do, and the likely scar, before he starts.
Can a lipoma come back?
Yes. Lipomas can come back if the capsule isn't fully removed. Every removal carries some risk of the lesion coming back, and new lipomas can form elsewhere. Dr Shahe explains the risk for your lipoma before you decide.
Will there be a scar?
Yes, there will be a scar where the cut was made. Every removal carries some risk of scarring or colour change, and removal can leave a patch of darker skin, especially on black or brown skin. Dr Shahe explains the likely scar before you decide.
Is lipoma removal available on the NHS?
Removal for appearance alone isn't usually available on the NHS. A lump that's painful, hard, fixed or growing is different: see your GP, who can refer you. People come to the clinic when a harmless lipoma bothers them and the NHS won't remove it.
What does it cost?
Removal is from £250 per lipoma. The consultation is £50, and there's no consultation charge if removal goes ahead on the same day. Dr Shahe confirms the plan and the cost before anything is removed. Prices include VAT.
Is there an age limit?
Removal is for adults aged 18 and over. Dr Shahe asks about your health and any medicines at the assessment, which decides whether removal suits you.
