The treatment

Leg Thread Vein Treatment: how it works

Every patient starts with a consultation. Dr Shahe Boghossian examines your legs and asks about your health and medicines. Most adults have some thread veins, and they're harmless, but they can sit on top of a problem in the veins underneath, which is why the assessment comes first. If you have varicose veins, or signs that point to them, he'll advise a scan and refer you rather than treat the surface. If treatment suits you, Dr Shahe prescribes it and gives it himself, in appointments spaced so that each one can settle before the next.

After your appointment

Aftercare

Follow the aftercare Dr Shahe gives you after each session, including any advice on compression stockings and walking. If a vein bleeds heavily, call 999. A painful, hard vein needs your GP urgently.

A consultation first, then a few visits

The clinic is at 65 London Road, Newark-on-Trent, NG24 1RZ, with free parking at the front.

Every patient sees Dr Shahe for a consultation before any treatment. If treatment suits you, it runs over a few appointments, spaced so that each one can settle before the next. The total commitment runs over months, and the number of trips stays low.

Patients travel to us from Balderton, Farndon, Collingham, Southwell, Bingham and Ollerton, and from Lincoln, Grantham and Sleaford.

Bulging, rope-like veins are a different problem. The varicose vein consultation covers them, and vein removal explains how leg veins differ from facial veins. Varicose veins on the NHS in Nottinghamshire covers what the NHS funds locally, for thread veins and varicose veins.

Common questions

Frequently asked about Leg Thread Vein Treatment

What does leg thread vein treatment cover?
Thread veins, spider veins and small reticular veins on the legs. Most adults have some thread veins, and they're harmless and don't bulge. Varicose veins are a different problem: they usually need a duplex ultrasound scan first, so they have their own consultation here, and Dr Shahe refers you on if you need a scan or treatment.
Why is there a consultation before treatment?
The treatment is prescription-only, so a doctor has to assess you in person first. Half of people with marked thread veins have no varicose veins, but thread veins can sit on top of a problem underneath. Dr Shahe examines your legs and takes your medical history before deciding whether treatment suits you, and he'll say so if it doesn't.
Who carries out the treatment?
Dr Shahe Boghossian, Medical Consultant, GMC 5204600, with a background in vascular surgery. He assesses you, prescribes the treatment and gives it himself. You can check his registration on the GMC register. No one else at the clinic gives this treatment.
What are the side effects?
The injections can sting. Brown staining and new tiny veins can appear near the treated area. They're uncommon after liquid treatment. Rarely, a clot can form, which is why Dr Shahe takes a full medical history first and tells you which symptoms to report after treatment.
How soon can I get back to normal?
Most people return to normal activities within a day. Dr Shahe gives you written aftercare after each session, including any advice on compression stockings and on walking. Plan to wear clothes you can get over your legs easily and drive in comfortably.
Will the veins come back?
Veins that have been treated close, but the tendency to form new thread veins stays. New ones can appear over time, so no one can promise a leg that stays clear. Dr Shahe will tell you at consultation what treatment can and can't do for the veins you have.
Is thread vein treatment available on the NHS?
The NHS in Nottinghamshire doesn't routinely fund thread vein treatment, because thread veins are harmless. NHS varicose vein treatment in Nottinghamshire needs varicose eczema, skin hardening or an ulcer, two documented clots, or a major bleed. If you have any of those, see your GP.
What if a vein bleeds or becomes painful?
If a vein is bleeding heavily, call 999. Bleeding veins, leg ulcers and painful, hard veins need your GP urgently. They aren't something to book a cosmetic appointment for, and the clinic won't treat them as one.
Can I have treatment at any age?
Treatment is for adults aged 18 and over. The consultation covers your medical history and any medicines you take, which decides whether treatment suits you.
